University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics (UUHC) is staffed by more than 3,000 practicing clinicians, including 1,800 credentialed and privileged physicians and 1,250 advanced practice clinicians who support six hospitals: University of Utah Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, John A. Moran Eye Center, University of Utah Orthopedic Center, Huntsman Mental Health Institute (formerly University Neuropsychiatric Institute), and the Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital, which opened in May 2020; 12 community health centers; nine urgent care locations; and numerous specialty centers for cardiology, ophthalmology, neurosciences, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, cancer, men’s and women’s health, fertility services, orthopedics, and surgery. University of Utah physicians provide care for pediatric patients at Primary Children’s Hospital, located on the U of U campus, through an innovative partnership with Intermountain Healthcare. University of Utah Health is the only academic health center in the Rocky Mountain West, and UUHC’s patient referral area extends to cover 10 percent of the land mass of the continental United States, with numerous clinical services that include a Level 1 trauma center and the region’s only comprehensive burn center. Eight AirMed bases offer helicopter and airplane transportation to care facilities within a 1,700-mile radius. A growing network of 23 regional affiliates and 83 telehealth sites further extends that reach through urban, rural, and frontier populations of the five-state Mountain West.

UUHC has been recognized by Vizient, Inc. in the Top 10 for inpatient quality of care 10 years running (twice #1) and the Top 5 in Ambulatory Care 5 years running. University of Utah Hospital was ranked the No. 1 hospital in Utah six years running by U.S. News & World Report , and U of U Health was rated"high performing"in 10 adult specialties and procedures/conditions. University Hospital received a 5-Star rating from CMS in 2018. UUHC was named a Most Wired Hospital for the sixth consecutive year and has been recognized by Forbes on the list of Best Employers. The CEO of the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics is the senior executive responsible for ensuring that the entire system-wide clinical enterprise functions at the highest levels including delivering safe, high-quality patient care, efficient management of resources, smooth and efficient administrative services, implementation of strategic and operational plans, and adherence to budget targets. The CEO will work collaboratively with other University of Utah Health (U of U Health) clinical, operational and educational senior leaders to achieve its mission of patient care, education, research, and community service. The CEO UUHC will work closely with the Senior Vice President, Health Sciences/CEO of U of U Health to expand the current scope of the Health System, to develop new sites of service and new strategic partnerships, thus ensuring a robust Health System that is distinguished by offering outstanding patient care programs and strong financial performance.

This position reports to the Senior Vice President, Health Sciences; CEO, U of U Health; Executive Dean, U of U School of Medicine.

Responsibilities :

Governance – Works in close collaboration with the Senior Vice President, President of UUMG, CEO of UUHP, Deans, Department Chairs, UUHC Board, University of Utah Board of Trustees, and University Administration to provide leadership and direction for the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics.

Culture – Develops and fosters an environment of collaboration, respect, competence, transparency, innovation, and principle-driven management. The CEO will ensure maintenance of a positive work environment, promoting a service-oriented culture dedicated to the quality of care and the patient experience, and support of their families, referring physicians and institutions, the community, and fellow employees.

Business and Operations – Provides direction to the financial, operational, and strategic management of UUHC by developing appropriate facilities, human infrastructure, and systems necessary to support the mission of the University Hospitals and Clinics, and University of Utah Health. The CEO UUHC will ensure the maintenance of a positive work environment, maintaining strong employee and faculty morale. Operations will meet a high standard of excellence, ensuring the quality of patient experience and care. The CEO will be responsible for assuring that UUHC is operated in a manner that is ethical, efficient, and financially sound. The CEO will ensure that information systems infrastructure serves to improve patient care delivery, clinical care outcomes, research, and management efficiency.

Organizational Relationships – The CEO will optimize the internal organization of UUHC, establishing clear structures of responsibility and authority to support highly efficient and effective patient care services, financial management, operations, and medical direction. The operating units within UUHC will be effectively integrated into and represented within the executive management structure. Clear, mutually beneficial business relationships will be maintained with organizational units of Health Sciences and particularly the School of Medicine. The CEO will maintain open channels of communication with the Department Chairs, faculty and staff to ensure continued support of the academic and clinical missions.

Community Relationships – The CEO will establish and cultivate strong, credible and trusting relationships with community constituencies, building them as a basis for fulfilling the mission of UUHC. The CEO will act as an effective representative, advocate and spokesperson for UUHC with community, governmental and citizen organizations.

Management Team – The CEO will select, recruit, develop and lead a cohesive, diverse, results-oriented senior management team, focused on the successful performance and operation of the UUHC.

Strategic Vision – The CEO will develop, articulate and implement a strategic vision for the UUHC that is consistent with the University of Utah Health strategic plan.

Qualifications :


The new CEO will be a visionary and proactive servant leader who can build, support and foster an organizational environment that encourages excellence, distinction, responsibility and accountability to fulfill the mission and achieve the vision of UUHC. The CEO will have demonstrated success in leading a large and complex health care organization, advancing change, improving operational health, growing programs and services, and delivering results designed to expand care delivery while standardizing processes and reducing overall expense. S/he will champion the academic health center tripartite mission and continue to build and promote U of U Health as an innovative leader in care delivery.

Healthcare Executive Leadership: 15+ years of leadership experience of progressive scope and scale in the operations of hospitals and clinics in academic health centers and/or integrated delivery systems. Demonstrated ability to manage the complex financial and clinical pressures facing contemporary academic health centers.

Business and Financial Acumen: With experience overseeing a P&L.

Growth and Performance Improvement: Experience and expertise in growing innovative clinical programs across the full spectrum of inpatient, procedural, ambulatory, and community settings as well as driving operational improvements to yield strong financial results.

Partnership Development and Community Engagement: Success building alliances and strengthening relationships with key stakeholders across the organization as well as with neighboring communities


Leadership in Academic Health Care Delivery: Exceptional reputation for leading an organization to provide outstanding clinical care and patient experience locally and regionally, in an environment that fosters regional and national distinction in academic medicine and research.

Graduate degree in healthcare administration, business administration, medicine, and/or related field(s).
