Job Summary

The School of Dentistry ( SOD ) is seeking an experienced Dental Clinic Manager for its new clinic in Rose Park. Under minimal supervision, responsible for planning, organizing, directing and/or controlling all aspects of assigned outpatient clinic’s internal and external customer service, human resource and financial management operations. Acts as a catalyst between the department and its customers and staff to ensure continuity and quality of service and care. Will be responsible for helping to build and maintain robust operational collaboration between students, dental hygiene schools, and faculty practice providers.

1. Supervises the daily operations of the department including assisting in hiring and retaining staff, assigning work, evaluating performance, training, planning work schedules and recommending pay increase. 2. Forecasts, develops and implements policies and procedures in the areas of customer service, human resources and budgetary goals and objectives that are consistent with University of Utah’s policies. 3. Ensures efficient, effective, and compliant operations between a wide variety of internal and external providers. 4. Markets and promotes new and existing programs and services to internal and external customers. 5. Participates in University-wide committees to establish customer service standards and administrative plans and policies. 6. Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships. 7. Ensures customer satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions and providing appropriate follow-through. 8. Develops departmental strategies consistent with the assigned departments continuous quality improvement program. 9. Ensures competency of staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through on going staff performance evaluations. Problem Solving The incumbent has the authority to develop department staffing schedules, which may include duty assignments, vacations and other requests for time off. The incumbent is authorized to enforce the department’s written standards of practice, policies and procedures and initiate corrective action as necessary. The incumbent is actively involved in the hiring interview process and will have input into the selection of new employees. The incumbent assumes the major responsibility for the employee evaluation process. The incumbent recommends purchases for the acquisition of necessary supplies.

Major challenges encountered by the incumbent include scheduling work shifts and making any adjustments to the schedule in response to staff absences so all job duties are performed. Another challenge is evaluating job performances to insure department job standards are being maintained and taking action to correct problems. The incumbent will perform quality assurance duties to maintain preventive procedures on equipment and/or instruments.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.
