Job Summary

The Director of Comparative Medicine is responsible for the strategic oversight and operation of a complex academic program consisting of 13 different facilities that span the campus. The Director also serves as the Attending Veterinarian for the University. The University has over 600 approved protocols and 156,000 square feet of facilities with a staff of 85 technicians who operate and manage these facilities.

Responsibilities

Establishes the organization mission and values. Direct the development of departmental goals through strategic planning. Provides leadership and direction for all related departments; oversees department activities consistent with the overall research objectives of the University. Plans, directs, and coordinates the operation of departmental facilities. Directs the financial planning and preparation of budgets. Directs the allocation of space and resources. Serves and participates on University and outside committees. Communicates to the executive staff the financial status and other operating conditions of related departments for the purpose of improving organization performance.

Minimum Qualifications

•Doctor of Veterinary Medicine ( DVM , VMD ) degree from an AVMA -accredited institution.

•Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine ( ACLAM ).

Five years or more of experience directing large complex academic programs. Five years of serving on an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC ). Must be eligible to obtain licensure to practice Veterinary Medicine in the state of Utah. Working knowledge of and experience with all federal and state regulations and requirements related to animals used in research. Five years of experience managing a program accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International ( AAALAC ). Extensive experience with the design and construction of vivaria. Experience with operating in compliance with the FDA’s Good Laboratory Practices ( GLP ). Experience with a wide variety of research animal species. Must be eligible to obtain DEA license for obtaining and handling controlled substances. Must exhibit a customer-service oriented management style that assists and supports the institution’s researchers. Must demonstrate proven management and strategic planning skills in the areas of budget, facilities, and personnel.
